Waiting?for?Goldie ①I’ve got an important job to do. Im really nervous about it. Its a big responsibility. Im in Grandads garden, sitting outside his pigeon loft(鸽舍).Im waiting for Goldie to come home. ②Goldies proper name is Goldeneye. Shes Grandads champion racing pigeon. Shes famous. Shes won loads of cups. This morning she was released two hundred miles away with lots of other pigeons. And now shes racing back home. ③Come on, Goldie. Come on, Goldie. Come on, Goldie! Thats me, calling Goldeneye back home. But I cant see her yet. She should be flying in any minute. ④I really want Goldie to win this race. I want to give Grandad some good news when I see him tonight in hospital. Hes had a heart attack. ⑤Fly outside. Go on, get going! I’m letting the other pigeons out to welcome Goldie home. My eyes search the blue sky. Still no sign of Goldie. ⑥Thats her! But it isnt. Its just a wild pigeon. Not Grandads champion racer. ⑦Calm down, Danny! I tell myself. Thats what Grandad would have said: Calm down, Danny. Calm down, son! ⑧ But it’s hard to be calm. Im getting more nervous every minute. Because Goldie should be here by now. Whats happened to Goldie? I ask the other pigeons on the roof of the loft. But they are no hope. ⑨Suddenly Ive got a sick feeling in my stomach. Ive remembered what Grandad said about the falcons(隼) nearby. It makes me shudder(发抖). ⑩I hate those falcons. They probably killed Goldie. My chest is burning when I think about that. I can feel myself getting really angry. My fists are all bunched up(攥紧),in tight white knots(关节).I keep getting those awful pictures in my head. I cant bear to think about it. ? Come on, Goldie. Come on, Goldie. But the sky is blue and empty. Maybe she isnt coming back. No! I tell myself. Goldie always comes back. ?Thump, thump, thump. Whats that? Its my heart pounding. Thats how nervous I am. Calm down, son, I tell myself. But where is she? Shes never been this late before. What am I going to tell Grandad? ? Grandad say
