MTBE ABNORMAL CONDITIONS;MTBE System Abnormal Phenomenon The purpose of this document is to identify the abnormal phenomenon associated with the MTBE System and the steps taken to rectify the phenomenon. MTBE Intermediate and Outlet Filters on the MTBE One-Step Reactors continue to plug within a short time: Loss of catalyst due to erosion or corrosion of screens inside the reactors. The reactor with loss of catalyst containment will have to be bypassed, shutdown and repaired. Moly contamination in the TBA feed. Check TBA Removal Column operation and resolve Moly contamination in the TBA. PO contamination in the TBA feed. Check the 2nd Stage Primary Fractionator operation and resolve the PO contamination in the TBA. Caustic salt build up in the neutralization loop. Reduce the amount of caustic injection to MTBE on the outlet of the One-Step Reactors and allow the pH to slowly drop to the acidic side and this will wash the caustic salts formation in the neutralization loop. ;MTBE System Abnormal Phenomenon continued: MeOH Extractor upset (water or caustic carry over to the MTBE Drying Column): The MeOH Extractor is methanol or acetone rich and has lost the water interface. An azeotrope in the MeOH Extractor must operate in a water based azeotrope solution. If this azeotrope solution is allowed to build towards the hydrocarbon side of the solution, then the water/hydrocarbon solution will carry over the top of the MeOH Extractor and enter the MTBE Drying Column and cause MTBE product to go high on water content. Reduce TBA feed to MTBE to bring MeOH Extractor upset back in control and towards normal operations. Excessive caustic addition and build up will also cause MeOH Extractor upset. Reduce caustic addition if this occurs and allow caustic to neutralize to normal conditions. Water carry over to the MTBE Drying Column: Water in the MTBE Drying Column will migrate to the column bottoms and reboiler. This will be indicated by a significant loss of he
