Oneimportantthingthestudentslearnedwasthatthegarbageinlandfillsdisappearedvery slowly.Thatwassurprisingtothestudents,aswellastomanyscientistswhohadpredictedthat about70%ofthegarbageinlandfillswouldbreakdownnaturallyandquickly.Fromthelandfills, studentsevenfoundnewspaperstwentyyearsagoandforty-year-oldhotdogs. TheGarbageProjectalsodiscoveredthatwhatpeoplesaytheydowasoftenverydifferentfrom whattheyactuallydid.Thevolunteerstudentsaskedpeoplewhattheybought,ateanddrank,and thenthestudentscomparedthistowhatpeoplethrewaway.Forsomereason,thetwodidn’tmatch. Forexample,thestudentsfoundmuchmoreemptybottlesofbeerthanpeoplesaidtheydrank. InformationfromtheGarbageProjecthashelpedustoseehowmuchgarbageweactuallyputin landfills.Thestudentsarehopefulthatthiswillencourageustofindbetterwaystodispose(处置)ofourgarbage.
