Going to a doctor
In the U.S. people must make an appointment to see their doctor, and unless it’s a serious problem, they will probably have to wait several days for an appointment. When talking to the doctor, it’s important to describe the problem clearly and completely. Patients can bring a family member or friend for support – and for help with language difficulties. It’s appropriate for patients to ask the doctor questions about anything he or she says. In cases of very serious medical problems, some patients will also see another doctor to get a “second opinion” about the best treatment.
