* Text Analysis The quote the remark that “the battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton” (Para. 3) It is nothing to them that the remark is inapplicable his-torically and was never made by the Duke of Wellington, and that the Duke of Wellington was an Irishman. (Para. 3) It doesn’t matter to them that the remark is not historically accurate and was not made by the Duke of Wellington, the commander of the allies who defeated Napoleon, and that the Duke of Wellington was not even an Englishman, but an Irishman. The code of conduct, deeply instilled values, and solidarity required to defeat Napoleon were acquired while the British officers were boys, engaged in competitive sports on the playing fields of the public schools. * Text Analysis They go on quoting it because it expresses their sentiments; they feel that if the Duke of Wellington did not make it he ought to have (Para. 3) This remark, whether it was made by the Duke of Welling-ton or not, best expresses the Old Boys’ unquestioning attachment to their public schools. Pay attention to the satirical tone of the remark. The author satirizes the public school boys’ blind and stubborn worship of their schools. * Text Analysis ... as various as the sands of the sea...
