True. But the Roman Empire fell in 476 and I know of no evidence of the use of proper infantryformations in Europe between then and the turn of the 14th C. (Flanders Wallace). In between, it was relatively chaotic. Well, only an idiot would charge ahead into the enemy. There might not always have been real formations, but soldiers probably moved in some kind of clumps or lines. Sort of. They rallied to the flag (wherever their commander or the commanders flag was). Be we already replicate that de facto with our limited commands (Follow me, Stay here, etc.). An archers line and time to set a pre-battle array would be probably the limit of what can be asked for. But not a square or anything as formal as that. Formations requires drilling. And, save for a few exceptions (e.g. monastic orders, professional companies), Medieval armies didnt drill. Maybe the hold position/follow me commands could simply be modified by Armagan to give them a shorter range... Or maybe put in a new command toggle key for clump together/scatter. That way we could effectively double all the commands and choose between the old loose rabble and the new slightly more compact groups. Harold of Wessexs shield wall at Hastings? The mounted infantry warfare of the Danish brothers against Alfred the Great? (for anyone unsure, this was an infantry army which used horses for rapid march-speeds, then dismounted to form shield-walls to fight. Alfred beat them when he taught his peasants to break shield walls..... and fight in their own shield wall.) Byzantium? Cant quote any details, but I cant imagine the Eastern Empire had NO formations? The shield wall is virtually intuitive when friends fight on the same side. People bunch up for safety, hence the ease with which Napoleon put green conscripts into attack in massive, close-packed coloumns. So everyone squeezes together, and holds their shield direction enemy. Eh Voila, shield wall. What I hope changes is enemies hugging you in melee
