The Global Terrorism Index Report for 2022 has just been released, and it paints a complex and ever-evolving picture of the current state of global terrorism.According to the report, the overall number of deaths from terrorism has decreased for the fifth consecutive year, with a 12% drop in the number of lives lost compared to 2021. This is due in large part to the decline in terrorist activity in countries like Syria, Iraq, and Nigeria.However, while overall deaths from terrorism have decreased, the report notes that the number of countries affected by terrorism has actually increased. This means that while fewer people are being killed by terrorist attacks, instability and fear caused by these attacks are still a major challenge for many nations.One of the biggest trends highlighted in the report is the rise of right-wing extremism as a significant threat to global security. While right-wing extremism has often been dismissed as a fringe movement, the report notes that it has become increasingly organized, with many groups embracing violence as a way to promote their ideologies. In the past year, there have been a number of high-profile terrorist attacks carried out by right-wing extremists, including the massacre at a mosque in New Zealand and the shooting at a synagogue in Germany.ISIS remains a significant threat, with the group still carrying out attacks in Iraq and Syria, and its affiliates launching new operations in places like Afghanistan, the DRC, and Somalia. The report notes that ISIS has also significantly increased its online presence and is actively recruiting new members through the use of social media platforms.Another major trend highlighted in the report is the growing use of drones by terrorist groups. While drones have been used for surveillance and reconnaissance purposes for many years, they have now become a weapon in their own right.
