When was the last time you wrote a letter in longhand or used a pay phone? And nobody who can afford an iPod walks around with a Walkman anymore. But digital technology causes a host of new problems, such as computer malware, digital identity theft and the enormous headaches involved in migrating digital data when upgrading to new software or machines. Just ask Susan Leviton, a graphic artist in San Francisco. Five years ago, she purchased Adobe Photoshop from a company store and installed the photo-editing software on her computer. Last year, she decided to upgrade her Windows Vista machine to Windows 7 in order to take advantage of new features. Problem was, when she attempted to reinstall Photoshop, she was unable to do so because of whats called digital-rights-management (DRM) protections. Simply put, Adobe would not allow her to reinstall its software on a second machine. Fortunately, she was eventually able to resolve the problem with the help of Adobes customer-service department. But she says it was a hugely frustrating experience and that she wont be doing business with Adobe again. As Katharine Chrzanowski, a research scientist and IT security manager at Arizona State University, put it: Many people are living their lives completely in the digital world and dont even know it. Chrzanowski warns that those who dont understand the technology theyre using can find themselves vulnerable to digital identity theft and other forms of cybercriminality. The average person doesnt understand what theyre being asked when they get a message saying theres a problem with their digital certificates or that a particular script should be blocked, she says.
