流坑村古楹联英译研究的开题报告 Title: A Study on the English Translation of Ancient Couplets in Liukeng Village Introduction Liukeng Village, located in the south of China, is renowned for its well-preserved ancient architectures and cultural heritage. Among them, the ancient couplets inscribed on the lintels of the old houses have gained wide attention from scholars and tourists alike. These couplets, also known as “古楹联” in Chinese, are composed of two lines of poems in parallel, with the same number of characters in each line. These couplets feature various themes, such as moral education, landscape appreciation, and historical events, reflecting the local customs and beliefs. As the globalization deepens, the cultural exchange between China and the world has become increasingly frequent. The translation of Chinese culture, including ancient couplets, has thus receiving more attention. However, the English translation of such couplets faces various challenges, including preserving the original meaning, maintaining the artistic expression, and adapting to the cultural differences between China and the West. Research Questions To address the aforementioned challenges, the following research questions are proposed: 1. What are the characteristics of ancient couplets in Liukeng Village? 2. What are the difficulties in translating ancient couplets into English? 3. How can these difficulties be overcome in the translation process? Methodology This research will employ a qualitative method, combining literature review, case study, and expert interview. Firstly, the literature review will investigate the history and cultural significance of ancient couplets in Liukeng Village, as well as the translation theories and techniques. Secondly, a case study of selected couplets will be conducted to analyze the specific difficulties and solutions in the translation process.
