Title: Action Research to Improve Middle School Students English Speaking Skills with the Help of English Teaching Assistant
Introduction:
English speaking skills are increasingly important for students at all levels in todays globalized society. However, many middle school students in China experience difficulties in speaking English fluently due to a lack of language input, confidence, and practice opportunities. As an English teaching assistant, I believe that my role can help to overcome these barriers.
Research Question:
How can I, as an English teaching assistant, help to improve middle school students English speaking skills in a Chinese classroom setting?
Objectives:
1. To design and implement engaging and interactive English speaking activities that can promote students vocabulary and fluency.
2. To encourage students to speak up and express their ideas in English.
3. To foster a positive and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable and confident to practice their English speaking skills.
4. To evaluate the effectiveness of the English speaking intervention by analyzing students pre- and post-intervention speaking assessments.
Methodology:
This action research will be conducted in a Chinese middle school over a period of six weeks. The target students are a class of 30 eighth-graders who are at a beginner to intermediate level in English speaking. The research will include the following steps:
1. Pre-intervention assessment: Administer a speaking assessment to establish the baseline level of students English speaking skills.
2. Intervention design: Plan and implement interactive and engaging English speaking activities, such as role-plays, debates, and discussions, that target students speaking weaknesses and encourage them to practice speaking in a supportive environment.
3. Intervention implementation: Conduct the English speaking activities in class for six weeks, with the assistance of the English teachin
