Introduction
Above and over are two commonly used spatial prepositions in English, which are greatly concerned in the fields of linguistics and cognitive psychology due to their vital roles in language expression and visual perception. Previous studies have revealed that English native speakers may have different cognitive strategies in using these two prepositions based on various factors such as context, task demands, and cultural background (e.g. Clark, 1973; Talmy, 2003; Coventry et al., 2008). However, the exact nature of these differences and their underlying psychological mechanisms are still under debate.
This present study aims to investigate English native speakers cognitive and linguistic behavior when using above and over prepositions in different spatial contexts. Specifically, we aim to answer the following research questions:
1. How do English native speakers use and perceive these two prepositions in static and dynamic spatial relationships?
2. What are the cognitive and environmental factors that influence their use of these prepositions?
3. What are the theoretical implications of these findings on language cognition and expression?
Methods
Participants
Thirty-five English native speakers (18 males, 17 females) aged 18-34 years old were recruited as the participants in this study. All of them reported to be free of any color vision deficiency and neurological disorders. They received course credits or monetary compensation as rewards for their participation.
Procedure
The study consisted of two parts: an experimental task and an online survey. In the experimental task, participants were presented with a series of static and
