In China, movie titles often use metaphors, which can be difficult to translate into English. This study aims to explore the translation strategies of Chinese movie title metaphors from the perspective of functional equivalence theory. Methodology To achieve the research aim, the author first collected and screened Chinese movie title metaphors and built a corpus of 91 samples. The author then analyzed the types of metaphors, the degree of understanding of the source language metaphors by the target audience, and the use of different translation strategies to explore the translation strategies of Chinese movie title metaphors. Results The results show that the translation strategies of Chinese movie title metaphors mainly include literal translation, free translation, adaptation, and creation; among which adaptation and creation are more frequently used. The cultural background, language habits, and film genres of the target audience also have a certain impact on the translation strategy. Discussion From the perspective of functional equivalence theory, the study shows that the process of translating Chinese movie title metaphors is not simply a matter of linguistic equivalence, but also involved with cultural and communicative factors.
