An Interim Report on Contrastive Analysis of Discourse Markers in Academic English and Chinese Discourse - a Study of Native Chinese Speakers
Introduction
Discourse markers are crucial linguistic devices that facilitate coherence and cohesion in texts, thus playing a significant role in communication. In academic writing, discourse markers act as metadiscourse to indicate the writers attitude, stance, organization, and relationship with the reader or audience. The present study seeks to investigate the use of discourse markers in academic English and Chinese discourse from a cross-linguistic perspective, with a particular focus on the use of meta-discourse markers.
Research questions
- What are the differences and similarities in the use of discourse markers between academic English and Chinese?
- How do native Chinese speakers use discourse markers in academic English writing compared to their Chinese counterparts?
- How do discourse markers contribute to the coherence and organization of academic discourse in English and Chinese?
Methodology
The study employs a contrastive analysis approach and corpus-based methodology to investigate the use of discourse markers in academic writing. The corpus includes academic texts written by native Chinese speakers in English and Chinese, respectively, with a focus on meta-discourse markers. The research instruments used in this study consist of discourse completion tasks, interviews, and a concordance analysis of the corpus. Qualitative analysis is conducted to identify the differences and similarities in the use of discourse markers in academic English and Chinese.

The preliminary findings show that there are significant differences in the use of discourse markers in academic English and Chinese.
