Unit 7 National Stereotypes
I. Unit Overview
In Text A, Matti Arpola, a Finnish young visitor to Britain, met James Saxon on a
train. This man’s dressing and manner evoked Matti’s wild imagination about his life
and identity. He was predicted to be an average or miserable British man, probably an
office clerk or a shop assistant, with a plain wife and several children and were
struggling to make ends meet. However, this judging based on the man’s appearance
failed. According to Matti’s host Geoffrey, Sir James Saxon is a naturalized British
with a Finnish origin, and an influential billionaire. Matti learned from the incident
not to judge people by their appearance alone. In lecturing about the text, Ts should
guide Ss to explore the origin of Matti’s imagination about the man, and question
whether it is well-founded or not. Comparing Matti’s prediction with the man’s true
identity, Ss are encouraged to think further about the influence of bias, stereotypes
and sentiments in judging a person. As a language feature, adjectives are frequently
used in Text A to describe Sir James Saxon, and Ts could plan more exercise for Ss to
practice integrating those adjectives into their own writing.
Unlike Text A, Text B is a non-fiction about English character. The author
describes how an Englishman talks and thinks from several perspectives, including P.
C. Buck, AndréMaurois, and H. A. L Fisher’s accounts. Ss could learn how different
opinions are reorganized to reveal the author’s opinion about the English manner. In
the text, there are many culturally loaded words including important names and
incidents in English history. Ss should learn to explore them in library or on the
Internet instead of relying on the Ts too much for factual based knowledge. However,
