英语专业学生母语素养薄弱问题分析的中期报告
Dear Professor,
I am writing to submit the progress report of my research on the issue of weak mother tongue literacy among English major students.
Firstly, I have conducted a literature review of numerous studies on this topic, both in China and abroad. The findings indicate that the language learning process is heavily influenced by the students mother tongue literacy level. Specifically, mother tongue literacy can facilitate students acquisition of English language skills, including reading comprehension, writing ability, and language proficiency. However, many English major students in China lack a solid foundation of their mother tongue. The reasons for such deficiency are multifaceted, including the education system, teachers qualifications, and students attitudes towards learning their mother tongue.
Secondly, I have conducted a survey among English major students at our university to gather their opinions and thoughts on this issue. The results showed that more than half of the respondents admitted to having weak mother tongue literacy. They believed that their primary school education, particularly in the area of Chinese language, was inadequate and failed to provide a solid foundation for their later language learning. Moreover, some students considered their parents influence pivotal, with some parents emphasis on English proficiency leading to neglecting their mother tongue. Some students reported that they found Chinese language classes boring and preferred to allocate their time to studying other subjects.
Thirdly, I have analyzed some potential solutions to address this issue. One approach is to focus on the development of mother tongue skills during English language classes, such as improving students reading and writing ability in Chinese. Another strategy includes raising students awareness of the value of their mother tongue, encouraging them to grow a positive attitude towards learning it. Moreover, cooperating with primary
