Background:
Asanimportantlanguageskill,writingisanessentialpartofcollegeEnglishteaching.However,manystudentsstrugglewithwritingduetodifficultiesingrammar,vocabulary,andorganization.Traditionalgrammar-basedwritinginstructionmaynoteffectivelyaddressthesechallenges.Therefore,newpedagogicalapproachesareneededtoenhancestudentswritingskills.
Chunkingmethod,whichisbasedontheideathatlanguageisprocessedandproducedinchunksratherthanindividualwordsorstructures,hasbeenproveneffectiveinlanguageacquisitionandhaspotentialinimprovingwritingskills.However,thereislimitedresearchontheapplicationofchunkingmethodincollegeEnglishwritingteaching.Therefore,anempiricalstudyisneededtoinvestigatetheeffectivenessofchunkingmethodinimprovingstudentswritingskills.
ResearchQuestions:
1.HowdoestheapplicationofchunkingmethodaffectstudentswritingproficiencyincollegeEnglishwriting?
2.Howdostudentsperceivetheeffectivenessofchunkingmethodinwritinginstruction?
Methodology:
Thisstudywilladoptaquasi-experimentaldesigntoinvestigatetheeffectivenessofchunkingmethodincollegeEnglishwritingteaching.Twointactclassesofcollegestudentswillbeselectedasthestudysample.Oneclasswillreceivetraditionalgrammar-basedwritinginstruction,whiletheotherclasswillbetaughtusingthechunkingmethod.Thewritingproficiencyofthestudentswillbeassessedbypre-andpost-testsusingstandardizedwritingtests.Inaddition,asurveywillbeconductedtocollectstudentsperceptionsoftheeffectivenessofchunkingmethodinwritinginstruction.
