RATIONALE

ThisSAEAerospaceRecommendedPractice(ARP)providesupdatedandexpandedguidelinesforaccomplishingthe

safetyassessmentprocessoncivilaircraft,systems,andequipment.

PREFACE

SincetheoriginalpublicationofARP4761,thecivilaviationindustrysafetyassessmentprocesshasevolved.Manypractices

thatwereintheirinfancywhentheoriginaldocumentwaspublishedarenowwellestablishedandhavemoredefined

processes.Forexample,theAircraftFunctionalHazardAssessment(AFHA)whichwasatthattimestartingtobecome

commonpracticeisnowastandardelementofthesafetyassessmentprocess.TheAFHAprocessandlegacymethods

havebeenupdated,andthePreliminaryAircraftSafetyAssessment(PASA),AircraftSafetyAssessment(ASA),andnew
