BackgroundandPurpose:

WiththeincreasingnumberofinternationalstudentsstudyinginChina,thereisagrowingneedtoimprovetheirChineselanguageskills,especiallytheirabilitytoproducecohesivediscourse.Cohesion,thewayinwhichsentencesandideasareconnectedwithinatext,isanimportantaspectofeffectivecommunicationinanylanguage.However,studieshavefoundthatEnglish-speakinginternationalstudentswhostudyChineseoftenstrugglewithcohesivediscourse.Therefore,thepurposeofthisstudyistoanalyzehowEnglish-speakinginternationalstudentsusecohesivedevicesintheirChinesediscourseandtoidentifyanychallengestheyfaceindoingso.

ResearchQuestions:

1.WhattypesofcohesivedevicesdoEnglish-speakinginternationalstudentscommonlyuseinChinesediscourse?

2.WhatchallengesdoEnglish-speakinginternationalstudentsfaceinusingcohesivedevicesinChinesediscourse?

Methodology:

ThisstudywillemployaqualitativeapproachandanalyzethewrittenandspokendiscourseproducedbyEnglish-speakinginternationalstudentsstudyingChineseinChina.Atotalof20participantswillbeselectedpurposivelybasedontheirproficiencylevelinChineselanguage(beginner,intermediate,andadvanced).Datawillbecollectedthroughinterviewsandwrittenmaterials(e.g.,essay,journal,blogs).Theanalysiswillfocusonidentifyingcohesivedevicesusedbytheparticipants,suchasreferencedevices,conjunctions,andlexicalcohesion.ThestudywillalsoexaminetheparticipantsuseofChineselanguagefeatures,suchassentencestructures,particleusage,andwordorder,whichmayaffecttheirabilitytousecohesivedevices.
