fewdayslater,itwasatenderyoungflower,softandnew,
withapalegreencenndatroopofsilvergrayinsects
climbingupanddownthestalk.
Overthesummerthissunflowergrewintoantof
rediblebeauty,turningitsfacedailytowardthesunin
themostsubtleofways,theblackcenterofitdarkandalive
withadeepbluelight,asifflinthadsparkedanelemental1
firethere,ommunitywithrain,mineral,mountainair,
andsand.
Assummerchangedfromgreentoyellowtherewere
newvisitorsdaily:thelace‐wingedinsects,thebeeswhose
legswerefatwithpollen,andgrasshopperswiththeir
clatteringwingsanddesperatehunger.Therewereother
livesImissed,livestoosmallorhiddentosee.Itwasasif
thisntwithitshostofliveswasasociety,oneinwhich
momentbymoment,dependingonlightandmoisture,
therewasgreatanddiversechange.
