Drivedesignandmeantimebetweenfailures

Meantimebetweenfailures(MTBF)isamathematicalapproachtoidentifyingtheaveragetimebetweenfailuresin

equipment.Drivemanufacturers(includingABB)haveahistoryofprovidingMTBFdatabasedoncalculationsofcertain

drivecomponents,combinedwithassumedenvironmentalfactors,andparticularcomponentsbeingreplacedaspartof

apreventativemaintenanceapproach.Dependingonthedrivemanufacturer,resultsbetween20and50years,were

published.Realistically,thosenumbersarenotachievableinpractice.Thegoalofthistechnicalnoteisto“undo”25+

yearsoftheindustrymisinterpretingdriveMTBFvaluesbyfirstreviewingMTBFandthenshowhowABBdesignsand

teststhe580seriesdrivestoverifytheyarebestinclass.Whilethispaperisbasedonthe580series,whichismadeup

oftheACH580,ACQ580,andACS580,theconceptsareapplicabletootherdrivefamilies.

WhyisMTBFnottheanswer?

Aspreviouslymentioned,seeingMTBFdatapublishedwithvaluesgreaterthan20yearsisquitecommon.Someofthe

historyandpastmotivationwastopublishMTBFvaluesgreaterthanotherdrivesonthemarket,especiallyinthe

commercialHVACRandtheWaterWastewater(WWW)industries.HVACRandWWWmarketsareheavilydrivenby

meetingspecificationsforbothgreenfieldandbrownfieldprojects.Drivemanufacturersconsistentlytriedtopublish

numbershigherthanotherdrivemanufactures,inanattempttogivethemselvesacompetitiveadvantageinthe

specification.Whilethecalculationsweremathematicallyandscientificallysoundforanideallaboratoryenvironment,

theywerenotapplicabletohowdrivesareappliedatmostinstallations.Ifyouaskanyfacilitymanagerregardingthe

real-worldlifespanofdrives,theymayhavesomebutnotmanydrivesthatarestilloperatingafter20-25years.
