Abstract

Electricityiscentraltothefunctioningofmodernsocietiesandeconomies–and

itsimportanceisonlygrowingastechnologiesthatrunonelectricity,suchas

electricvehiclesandheatpumps,becomeincreasinglypopular.Powergeneration

iscurrentlythelargestsourceofcarbondioxide(CO2)emissionsintheworld,but

itisalsothesectorleadingthetransitiontonetzeroemissionsthroughtherapid

expansionofrenewableenergysourcessuchassolarandwindpower.Ensuring

consumershavesecureandaffordableaccesstoelectricitywhilealsoreducing

globalcarbondioxide(CO2)emissionsisoneofthecorechallengesoftheenergy

transition.

Giventhesetrends,theInternationalEnergyAgency’sElectricity2024isessential

reading.Itoffersadeepandcomprehensiveanalysisofrecentpoliciesandmarket

developments,andprovidesforecaststhrough2026forelectricitydemand,supply

andCO2emissions.TheIEA’selectricitysectorreport,whichhasbeenpublished

regularlysince2020,providesinsightintotheevolvinggenerationmix.Inaddition,

thisyear’sreportfeaturesin-depthanalysisonthedriversofrecentdeclinesin

electricitydemandinEurope;thedatacentresector’simpactonelectricity

consumption;andrecentdevelopmentsintheglobalnuclearpowersector.
