TheCajunpeople,descendantsoftheFrenchAcadianswho
resettledinsouthLouisianainthemid-1700s,havebeen
producingtheirowntraditionalstyleofmusicfornearlytwo
centuries.However,bythelate1940s,commerciallyrecorded
Cajunmusichadbeguntoloseitsindividualcharacterinfavorof
newsoundsheavilyinfluencedbyhillbillymusicandwestern
swing.Then,in1948,IryLejeunerecordedValseduPont
andbyhisownrelativesandneighborsinPointeNoire,Louisiana.
Lejeunewentagainstthegraintoperformintheold,traditional
stylelongforcedunderground.Somesaidtheyoungsingerfrom
ruralLouisianawhocarriedhisaccordioninafloursackdidnt
knowbetter,butcrowdsrushedtohearhishighlyemotional
music.Hisunexpectedpopularsuccessfocusedattentionon
culturalvaluesthatCajunshadbeguntofearlosing.
