ThesenoteswerewrittenduringtheFall,2004,andWinter,2005,terms.Theyareindeedlecture

notes–Iliterallylecturefromthesenotes.TheycombinematerialfromHandandFinch(mostly),

Thornton,andGoldstein,butcoverthematerialinadifferentorderthananyoneofthesetexts

anddeviatefromthemwidelyinsomeplacesandlesssoinothers.

ThereaderwillnodoubtaskthequestionIaskedmyselfmanytimeswhilewritingthesenotes:

whybother?Therearealargenumberofmechanicstextbooksavailableallcoveringthisvery

standardmaterial,completewithworkedexamplesandend-of-chapterproblems.Icanonlydefend

myselfbysayingthatallteachersunderstandtheirmaterialinaslightlydifferentwayanditis

verydifficulttoteachfromsomeoneelse’spointofview–it’slikewalkinginshoesthataretwo

sizeswrong.Itisinevitablethateveryteacherwillwanttopresentsomeofthematerialinaway

thatdiffersfromtheavailabletexts.Thesenotessimplyputmyparticularpresentationdownon

thepageforyourreference.

Thesenotesarenotasubstituteforapropertextbook;Ihavenotprovidednearlyasmany

examplesorillustrations,andhaveprovidednoexercises.Theyareasupplement.Isuggestyou

skimtheminparallelwhilereadingoneoftherecommendedtextsforthecourse,focusingyour

attentiononplaceswherethesenotesdeviatefromthetexts.
