sizeofouraveragepetcats.TheyliveinwetlandsofSouthAsiaandmangroveforests（红树林）ofSouthandSoutheast

Asia.Likemanyendangeredspecies,fishcatswereindangerofdyingoutmorethantwentyyearsago,mainlybecauseofthe

greatinternationalneedforfishfoodandthepeopleˈscuttingofthemangrovesatanextremelyfastspeed.

MangrovesofSoutheastAsiaarehometoagreatmanyfantasticspecies,likefishcats,turtles,shorebirdsandothers.

Mangrovescanprotectsoil,andtheycanbethefirstlineofprotectionbetweenstorms,tsunamisandthemillionsofpeople

wholivenexttothem.ThefactisthatmangrovescanstorealmostfivetotentimesmoreCO2thanotherforests.So

protectingmangrovesmaywellbelikeprotectingfivetotentimesmoreofotherforests.

Tenyearsago,inSouthIndia,manypeoplecametogethertochangethefutureoftheirhome.Inlessthan10years,with

internationalsupport,thestateforestdepartmentsandthelocalpeopleworkedtogethertorestoreover20,000acresof

unproductivefishandshrimpfarmsbackintomangroves.Nowexpertsareworkingwiththeminhelpingstudyandprotecting

themangrovesaswellasthespecieslivinginthem.Fishandshrimpfarmersarenowwillingtoworkwithexpertstotestthe

harvestofnatureprotectionlikefishes,turtlesandotherspeciesinmangroves.Thelocalfarmersareencouragedtoprotect

andplantmangroveswheretheyhavebeenlost.Awin-win-winforfishcats,localpeopleandtheglobalecosystem（⽣态系

统）isbeingbuilt.
