INTRODUCTION

Inbaseball,orsimilarsports,wheretheforceofapitched,hit,ordeflectedballcancausefacial

injury,thereisaneedforhead,facial,eye,andteethprotection.Aftercarefulconsiderationofthe

mechanismsandforcesinvolvedinthiscontext,thisspecificationforeyeandfacialprotective

equipmenthasbeenprepared.

Theimpacttestisdesignedtoapproximatetheimpactofadirectperpendicularblowfroma

baseballtravelingat30m/s(67.1mph).Thesespeedshavebeenconfirmedbyactualmeasurements

onbaseballsthrownbyyouthleaguepitchers.Performanceanddesignrequirementsdevelopedonthis

basisareintendedtominimizeinjuryandtoprolongtheusefullifeoftheequipment.However,

becauseofcomplexinteractionsofvariablessuchasballspeed,directionandpointofimpact,and

particularly,individualdifferencesinreactiontoimpactforces,itmustbekeptinmindthatsome

injuries,evensomeseriousinjuries,arestillpossible.
