ThesteelsuspensionWaldo-HancockBridgecarried.Route1travelersoverthePenobscotRiver,nearthetownofBucksport,Mainefor74years.Thisvitallyimportanttransportationlinkprovidedsafepassageforcarloadsoftouriststhroughtheyears,inadditiontosignificantcommercialtrafficrelatedtoregionalpaper-making,granite-quarrying,boatbuilding,manufacturedhousingproductionandahostoffreightitems,suchasdeliveryofhomeheatingoil.In2002,ascheduledrenovationbeganandinthesummerof2003,themainsuspensioncableswereunwrappedtoprepareforavisualinspectionoftheindividualwiresinthe37cablesineachmaincable.Deteriorationofthemaincableonthesouthsideofthebridgewasmuchmoreadvancedthanexpected,leadingthebridgeowner,MaineDepartmentofTransportation,tosimultaneouslyundertakeastrengtheningprojectontheWaldo-HancockBridgeandthedesignofthePenobscotNarrowsBridge&Observatoryonaparallelalignmenttotheexistingbridge.
