    Linguisticcompetencereferstotheknowledgeofalanguagesystem.Theterm

    firstemergedintheworkofNoamChomsky,whereitreferredspecificallyto

    syntacticcompetence,andwasspecificallyopposedtolinguisticperformance.The

    termwasusedmorebroadlybyDellHymesinformulatingtheconceptof

    communicativecompetence.Likecommunicativecompetence,languagecompetence

    isoftendividedintovarioussubcompetences,suchassyntacticcompetenceand

    lexicalcompetence.

    AccordingtoChomsky,competenceistheidealspeaker/hearer,i.e.anidealized

    butnotarealpersonwhowouldhaveacompleteknowledgeoflanguage.Thismeans

    aperson’sabilitytocreateandunderstandsentences,includingsentencestheyhave

    neverheardbefore.Performanceistheactualuseofthelanguagebyindividualsin

    speechandwriting.

    Speakers’linguisticknowledgepermitsthemtoformlongerandlonger

    sentencesbyjoiningsentencesandphasestogetheroraddingmodifierstoanoun.

    numberyoucouldaddifdesired.Verylongsentencesaretheoreticallypossible,but

    theyarehighlyimprobable.

    Evidently,thereisadifferencebetweenhavingtheknowledgenecessaryto

    producesentencesofalanguage,andapplyingthisknowledge.Itisadifference

    betweenwhatyouknow,whichisyourlinguisticcompetence,andhowyouusethis

    knowledgeinactualspeechproductionandcomprehension,whichisyourlinguistic

    performance.

    Whenwespeak,weusuallywishtoconveysomemessage.Atsomestageinthe

    actofproducingspeech,wemustorganizeourthoughtsintostringsofwords.

    Sometimesthemessageisgarbled.Wemaystammer,orpause,orproduceslipsofthe

    tongue.Wemayevensoundlikethebaby,whoillustratesthedifferencebetween

    linguisticknowledgeandthewayweusethatknowledgeinperformance.
