Itwasjustonewordinonee-mail,butitcausedhugefinanciallosses for a multinational company.The message,written inEnglish,was sent by a native speaker to a colleague for whomEnglish was a second language.Unsureof the word,the receiverfoundtwocontradictorymeaningsinhisdictionary.Heactedonthewrongone.Monthslater,seniormanagementinvestigatedwhytheprojecthadfailed,costinghundredsofthousandsofdollars.
Whensuchmisunderstandingshappen,itsusuallythenative
speakerswhoaretoblame.Ironically,theyareworseatdeliveringtheirmessagethanpeoplewhospeakEnglishasasecondorthirdlanguage.
AlotofnativespeakersarehappythatEnglishhasbecometheworldsgloballanguage.Theydontfeeltheneedtoaccommodateoradapttoothers.Theyoftentalktoofastforotherstofollow,andusejokes,slang,short forms and references specific to their ownculture. “The first time I worked in an international
institution,somebodysaid‘ETA16:53’andIthought‘WhatonearthisETA?’”saysMichaelBlattrer,anexecutiveinaninternationalcompany.
Andthentheresculturalstyle.WhenaBritishreactstoa
proposalbysaying“Thatsinteresting”,afellowBritishmightrecognizethisas“Thatsrubbish.”Butothernationalitieswouldtaketheword“interesting”onfacevalue.
Also,lotsoftheinformationisnotfullyunderstoodbecauseofthe complex language native speakers use.Toomany non-native
speakers,especiallytheAsiansandtheFrench,aretooconcernedaboutnot“losingface”andnodapprovinglywhilenotgettingthemessageatall,becauseofwhich,thenativespeakerscontinuedeliveringinformationthatmakeslittlesensetothem.Theinformationgapisunnoticedandkeepswidening.
Nativespeakersshouldcommunicateefficientlywithsimplelanguage.WhentryingtocommunicateinEnglishwithagroupofpeoplewithdifferentlevelsoffluency,itsimportantfornativespe
