Abstract—Withtheadvancesinmachinelearning,thereisagrowinginterestinAI-enabledtoolsforautocompletingsourcecode.GitHubCopilot,alsoreferredtoasthe“AIPairProgram-mer”,hasbeentrainedonbillionsoflinesofopensourceGitHubcode,andisoneofsuchtoolsthathasbeenincreasinglyusedsinceitslaunchinJune2021.However,littleefforthasbeendevotedtounderstandingthepracticesandchallengesofusingCopilotinprogrammingwithauto-completedsourcecode.Tothisend,weconductedanempiricalstudybycollectingandanalyzingthedatafromStackOverflow(SO)andGitHubDiscussions.Morespecifically,wesearchedandmanuallycollected169SOpostsand655GitHubdiscussionsrelatedtotheusageofCopilot.Weidentifiedtheprogramminglanguages,IDEs,technologiesusedwithCopilot,functionsimplemented,benefits,limitations,andchallengeswhenusingCopilot.TheresultsshowthatwhenpractitionersuseCopilot:(1)ThemajorprogramminglanguagesusedwithCopilotareJavaScriptandPython,(2)themainIDEusedwithCopilotisVisualStudioCode,(3)themostcommonusedtechnologywithCopilotisNode.js,(4)theleadingfunctionimplementedbyCopilotisdataprocessing,(5)thesignificantbenefitofusingCopilotisusefulcodegeneration,and(6)themainlimitationencounteredbypractitionerswhenusingCopilotisdifficultyofintegration.OurresultssuggestthatusingCopilotislikeadouble-edgedsword,whichrequiresdeveloperstocarefullyconsidervariousaspectswhendecidingwhetherornottou
