    Whenhewasabout12yearsold,heranawaytosea.Hejoinedashi

    asacabinboy,eelingotatoesandcleaningthedecks.Attheageof18,

    hehadalreadytraveledtheworld.SoonhemetanexlorercalledRobert

    PearyandhebecameRobert’sservant.Whiletheywereinthejungle,

    oneofRobert’ssurveyteamfellintosomequicksand.Thenmanwasso

    frightened,helefttheexedition.Matthewtookovertheman’sjob.He

    andRobertthensentthenext18yearsexloringtheArctic.Theywent

    tolearntheskillstheyneededtosurviveinGreenland.Butontheirfirst

    attemtRobert’sfeetbecamebadlyfrostbitten.Hehadtotakeoffeightof

    Robert’stoes.ButstillRobertandMatthewwouldnotgiveu.Four

    timestheytriedtoreachthePole.In1908RobertandMatthewmade

    theirlasttritotheArctic.WhentheywerejustafewmilesfromthePole,

    Matthewsuddenlyfellthroughtheice.Luckilyamenwasclosebyand

    ulledhimoutbeforehedrowned.ThentheyreachedtheNorthPolein

    theend.Whentheycameback,amancalledFrederickCookhadclaimed

    tohavereachedtheNorthPolebeforethem.But,intheend,Cook’sclaim

    wasshowedtobeahoax.SoRobertwasrewardedwiththefameand

    medalshedeserved.BecauseMatthewwasablackman,hewasnot

    rewardedforhisartintheexedition.Matthewfinallyreceivesthe

    greatestmedal–theHubbardmedalin2000whenhewas81yeasold.In

    1998afilmcalledGloryandHonorwasmade,claimingtobethetrue

    storyoftheresearchfortheNorthPole.Then,in2001,aradio

    rogrammercalledStealingtheGlorywasroduced.Hewouldnowbe

    rememberedbyeoleallovertheworld!
