inRegulatingCancerStemnessinESCC

Tumor-initiatingcells(TICs)/Cancerstemcells(CSCs)

-CSChasbeendefinedasacellwithinatumorthatpossessesthecapacitytoself-renewandtocausetheheterogeneouslineagesofcancercells.

-PropertiesofCSCs–persistentself-renewal,sustainedproliferation,tumorinitiation.

-Othercommon(butnotdefining)characteristicsofCSCs–raritywithinatumor,stemcellmarkerexpression,abilitytodifferentiatealongmultiplelineages,chemo-resistance,

metastasis,etc.

>Non-CGmethylationdisappeareduponinduceddifferentiationofthe

embryonicstemcellsandwasrestoredininducedpluripotentstemcells.

>Thepresenceofnon-CGmethylationischaracteristicofanembryonicstem-cellstate.

>Thisconclusionraisesthepossibilitythatcancerstemcellscarrynon-CGmethylationwhiletheirnon-stemprogenyinthetumorcarryonlyCG

methylation.
