ExpressionismAmovementandsensibilityinthefieldsofpainting,literature,musicandarchitecturethatemergesinCentralEuropeinthefirstdecadeofthe20thcentury.Expressionismcoalescesintoaspecific“GermanExpressionism”around1910whenthetermisusedduringapaintingexhibitioninBerlin.Aroundthesametime,literaryartists,particularlypoets,begintoidentifythemselvesasGermanExpressionist;themovement’smostprominentpublicationisthejournaltitleDerSturm(TheStorm),whichranweeklyfrom1910-1914andmonthlyto1924.GermanExpressionistfilmappearsslightlylater:PaulWegener’shorrorfilmTheStudentofPrague(1913)maybeconsidereditsearliestexample.The1920sbringabouttheheydayofGermanExpressionistcinema.
