DuringBluetoothmoduledevelopmentthebc01’sfirmwarecanbeupdatedviathechip’sSPI

interface.

TheSPIisnotavailableinend-userproductssoternativemechanismisprovidedtoupgrade

thechip’sfirmware.Thismechanism,“devicefirmwareupgrade,”operatesoverthechip’sUSB,

H4andBCSPhosttransports.

TheBluetoothspecificationdescribeshowtheexistingDFUstandardistobeusedtoperform

firmwareupgradeoverUSB.Thebc01’sUSBinterfacesupportsthisstandard.

Thebc01firmwareusesanextendedformoftheDFUstandardtosupportfirmwareupgradeover

H4andBCSP.

OpenIssues

Asingleoutstandingissuerequiresattention:

IfaversionoffirmwareisdownloadedthathasavalidCRCandsignaturebutdoesnotallowa

hostconnectiontobeestablishedthenitisnotpossibletoreceitwithoutrevertingtouseofthe

SPI.Itmaybepossibletoaddternativemethodforstartingdownloadmodewithintheboot

loader,e.g.checkingforaspecificsequenceofserialdataafterpower-up.However,thiswould

notbeapplicabletoUSBdevices,andwouldprobablypreventtheUSBresettimingrequirements

frombeingmet.

Protocol

[BT]specifiesthattheDeviceFirmwareUpgradeprotocol,asdefinedin[USBDFU],shouldbe

usedoverUSBconnections.Avariationonthesameprotocolisalsosupportedbybc01viathe

BCSPandH4UARTtransports,withminimalchangestohandlethelackofstandardUSB

features.

TheDFUprocedureusesUSBcontroltransfersasdescribedin[USB].Theseconsistofeither
