Athighnoon,thesunwasscorchinghot.Withagoodharvestoffish,theboysmarchedintotheforestwithBradyfollowingthem.Afteralongwalk,theyfoundaclearingthatwasidealforacampsite(野营地).ThecampwassetupimmediatelyasSteveknewallthetricksofanexperiencedwildernesscamper.Anafternoonnapwasabsolutelyaspecialtreatinmid-summer.However,theboyswerewakenupbythefiercebarksofBrady.Outside,heavysmokefilledtheairandwind-blownflamewasskippingfromthetopofonetreetoanother.Thelongdrysummerturnedtheforestintoatinderbox.Inalittlewhile,SteveandZachwereinsidetheirtentpackingtheirbelongings.

Bradyliftedhisheadandsniffedthesmoke-ladenwind.Nextmoment,thedogboundedawayanddisappeareddownasharpslope.Theboysshoutedforhim,buthedidn’tcomeback.Stevecouldn’tblameBradyforpanicking.Hehimselfwantedtoruneventhoughhedidn’thaveacluewhichway.
