WHATISNEEDED
Thepotential(andprobablyincreasing)relevanceofsocialpsychologyfor
thesocialsciencesmaylieinthefactthatinthesocialsciences,thereisanin-
creasingneedfortheoriesonindividualbehaviorandinteractionthathelpex-
plainhowcollectivephenomenacomeabout.Bycollectivephenomena,I
meanphenomenasuchasmanypeopledoingsimilarthings(likecommitting
crimeordivorcingordiscriminating),ordoingthingscooperatively(like
joiningamovementorworkinginteams),ordoingthingscompetitively(like
competinginthemarketplaceorinpolitics),somecombinationofthese(as
insocialexchangeandsocialdilemmas),orthecollectiveresultsoftheseac-
tions(suchasratesorsocialnorms).Thisrequirestheoriesthatcandealwith
agreatvarietyofdifferentinfluencesonbehavioratthesametime.Forexam-
ple,ifonewantstoexplainthedifferenceindivorceratesbetween,say,Moroc-
canandautochthonousDutchcouplesintheNetherlands,onewouldhaveto
beabletotracetheoreticallythesimultaneous(andpossiblyinteractive)ef-
fectsofrelevantfactors.Lookingattheliteratureofempiricalstudies,one
wouldbeabletocompilealistoffactorsthathavecomeupinvariousstudies,
suchastheinformationaboutthepartnerbeforemarriage,ageatmarriage,in-
vestmentsintherelationships(suchasjointchildrenandproperty),normsof
