27.1INTRODUCTION
-radicaltechnologyhadtocomealongwaybeforeitgaineditscurrentwell-deservedrecog-
nitionamongsyntheticchemists.Traditionally,-radicalchemistryhasoftenbeenneglectedfor
rationalsynthesisoffinechemicalsbecauseoftheperceptionthatradicalsareuncontrollableand
unselective.However,thisnegativeviewwasrevisedwiththeadoptionoftributyltinhydridein
organicsynthesisafteritwasrecognizedthatreactionsinvolvingradicalscanindeedoccur
withahighdegreeofregioselectivityanddiastereoselectivity.Nevertheless,thefirstexamplesof
radicalreactionsthatproceedwithgenuineenantiocontrolwerereportedonlyinthemid1990s.1–5
Themajorityofapplicationsthatinvolvetributyltinhydridesarechainprocessesunderreducing
