7.1Introduction
Bothfiberandparticulatecompositematerialsprovideapplicationsin
materialssciencewherethemultiscalemicrostructureleadstotheneedfor
multiscalemodeling.Thelengthscalesencounteredrangefromthefiber
andparticlesizeswhosedimensionsaremeasuredinmicrons,tothe
individualpliesinlaminateswhosethicknessesaremeasuredinfractions
ofmillimeters,tothelaminatesthemselveswhosethicknessesinthe
laboratoryaremeasuredinmillimeters,e.g.,40–50mm.Thelaminates
thenformpartsofcompositestructureswhosesizesaremeasuredin
meters,althoughmodelingatthisscalewillnotformpartofthischapter.
Whileconventionalcompositesarebasedonessentiallyhomogeneous
matrices,whichcanbepolymeric,metallic,orceramic,advancedcom-
positesarealsobeingconsideredtohavematrices,whicharethemselves
compositesreinforcedbysubmicronparticlesorwhiskers,e.g.,carbon
nanotubes.Suchdevelopmentsleadtotheneedtobeabletoestimatethe
propertiesofcompositelaminatesthathavemultiscalereinforcements,
e.g.,fibersinparticulate/whisker-reinforcedmatrices.Also,thereisaneed
topredicttheonsetofdamageinthematerialswhentheyareoperatingin
serviceconditions.
Thischapterwillfocusontwoaspectsoftheproblemthatcomplement
workalreadypublisheddealingwithmultiscaleanalyticalmodelingfor
damagedcompositelaminates[7].Thefirstaspect,consideredinSects.
7.2–7.4,isthedevelopmentofnewunderstandingwithregardtothe
predictionof
