YoungmalesreturningtotheUnitedStates,Canada,andAustraliafollowingtoursofdutyoverseasduringWorldWarIIbeganfamilies,whichbroughtaboutasignificantnumberofnewchildrenintotheworld.Thisdramaticincreaseinthenumberofbirthfrom1946to1964(1947to1966inCanadaand1946-1961inAustralia)iscalledtheBabyBoom.

IntheUnitedStates,approximately79millionbabieswerebornduringtheBaby

Boom.Muchofthiscohortofnineteenyears(1946-1964)grewupwithWoodstock,theVietnamWar,andJohnF.Kennedyaspresident.

In2006,theoldestBabyBoomersareturning60yearsold,includingthefirstwoBabyBoomerpresidentsP,residentWsilliamJ.ClintonandGeorgeW.Bush,bothborninthefirstyearoftheBabyBoom,1946.

Inthe1930stoearly1940s,newbirthsintheUnitedStatesaveragedaround2.3tomillioneachyear.In1945,thenumberwas2.8millionbirths;itmarkedthebeginnioftheBabyBoom.In1946,thefirstyearoftheBabyBoom,newbirthsintheU.S.skyrocketedto3.47millionbirths!

Newbirthscontinuedtogrowthroughoutthe1940sand1950s,leadingtoapeakinthelate1950swith4.3millionbirthsin1957and1961.(Therewasadipto4.2

millionbirthsin1958)Bythemid-sixties,thebirthratebegantoslowlyfall.In(thefinalyearoftheBabyBoom),4millionbabieswerebornintheU.S.andin196therewasasignificantdropto3.76millionbirths.From1965on,therewasaplunginthenumberofbirthstoalowof3.14millionbirthsin1973,lowerthananyyearbirthssince1945!

From1973on,GenerationXwasnowherenearapopulousastheirparents.Thetotalbirthsroseto3.6millionin1980andthen4.16millionin1990.For1990on,the

numberofbirthshasremainedsomewhatcon–stfarnotm2000tonow,thebirthrate
