DSS5serversrequirebi-directional(Bidi)communicationbetweentheserverandmanageddevicesfor
mostDSSfunctionstooperateproperly.Inthiscontextcommunicationmeansthatoneendpointofthe
communication(eithertheDSSserverorthedevice)caninitiateaTCP-IPcommunicationwiththeother
endpoint.Forexample,iftheDSSserverinitiatesacommunicationwithadeviceandthedeviceisable
toanswerduringthesamecommunicationsessionthisdoesnotprovebi-directionalcommunication,
thiswouldonlybeconsidereduni-directionalcommunicationfromtheDSSServertotheDevice.Forthe
communicationtobebi-directionalthedevicewouldalsohavetobeabletoinitiateacommunication
sessionwiththeDSSServer.
DSSserverscommunicatewithFutureSmartdevicesoverTCPport7627.DSSserverscommunicatewith
pre-FutureSmartdevicesoverport1783.
SymptomsofBidiProblems
IfcommunicationbetweentheDSSserverandthedeviceareblockedinbothdirectionsthe
administratorwillgetan“unabletocommunicate”errorwhentryingtoaddthedevice,orwhile
performingaStatusupdate
