1–Introduction

Therefrigerationandairconditioningindustriesdependonbrazedcoppertubesasaleak-proofcarrierforpressurizedrefrigerant.Thecommon

approachtobrazingcoppertocopperorcoppertosteelistousefillermetal(usuallycopperalloy).Torchbrazingwithoxygen/fuelgas(acetylenein

mostcases)isthestandardpracticeinheatingtheseconnections.Largeandmediumscrollcompressorsconnectorsaremadeofsteelcoppercoated,

whichbenefittopreventcorrosionandfacilitateadhesionduringbrazingoperation.

2-Methodsandrequirements

Asperstandardspracticeintherefrigerationindustry,DanfossCommercialCompressorrecommendstheuseofhighsilvercadmiumfreesolderalloy

andflux(addedorfluxcoatedrods).Thebestsare40%,45%,and56%silverrods.Aminimumcontentof34%Ag(Silver)isrecommendedbyDanfoss.

Thesignificantsilvercontentinthesebrazingalloyswillhelpthebrazingoperation,providinganexcellentfluidityandalimitedheatingtemperature.

Itwillalsobringagoodresistancetocorrosion,aproperelongationcompatiblewithsystemvibration,andgoodbehaviorunderthermalvariation

improvingthestrengthofconnectionandlimitingfracturesandrefrigerantleaks.(CrucialwithA2LandA3refrigerants).

Theuseofself-fluxalloys(asphosphorousalloys)isnotrecommendedbyDanfoss.Thistypeofbrazingrequiresahigherworkingtemperature,

thatmayoverheattheconnectors,damagingthethinlayerofcopper,resultinginphosphidescreationandjointzoneembrittlement.
