Whenrobotsappeartoengagewithpeopleanddisplayhuman-likeemotions,peoplemaythinkofthemascapableof“thinking”,oractingontheirownbeliefsanddesiresratherthantheirprograms,accordingtotheresearchpublishedbytheAmericanPsychologicalAssociation.
“Therelationshipbetweenhuman-likeshape,human-likebehaviorandthetendencytoattribute(把……归因于)independentthoughtandintentionalbehaviortorobotsisyettobeunderstood,”saidstudyauthorAgnieszkaWykowska,PhD,aprincipalinvestigatorattheItalianInstituteofTechnology.“Asartificialintelligenceincreasinglybecomesapartofourlives,itisimportanttounderstandhowinteractingwitharobotthatdisplayshuman-likebehaviorsmightcausehigherlikelihoodofattributionofintentionalagencytotherobot.”
Acrossthreeexperimentsinvolving119participants,researchersexaminedhowindividualswouldseeahuman-likerobot,theiCub,aftersocializingwithitandwatchingvideostogether.Beforeandafterinteractingwiththerobot,participantscompletedaquestionnairethatshowedthempicturesoftherobotindifferentsituationsandaskedthentochoosewhethertherobot’smotivationineachsituationwasmechanicalorintentional.
Theresearchersfoundthatparticipantswhowatchedvideoswiththehuman-likerobotweremorelikelytoratetherobot’sactionsasintentional,ratherthanprogrammed,whilethosewhoonlyinteractedwiththemachine-likerobotwerenot.Thisshowsthatmereexposuretoahuman-likerobotisnotenoughtomakepeoplebelieveitiscapableofthoughtsandemotions.Itishuman-likebehaviorthatmightbecrucialforbeingdeemedasanintentionalagent.
AccordingtoWykowska,thesefindingsshowthatpeoplemightbemorelikelytobelieveartificialintelligenceiscapableofindependent
