necessarytoanyefforttoportrayamind,asoulthequalityoflife.Who
shouldwritethebiographyofafamily,forexample?Becauseoftheir
closenesstothesubject,familymembersmayhavespecialinformation,but
bythesametoken,theymaynothavethedistancethatwouldallowthemto
befair.Similarly,aking#39;sservantmightnotbethebestonetowritea
biographyofthatking.Butaforeignermightnothavetheknowledgeand
sympathynecessarytowritetheking#39;sbiographynotforareadership
fromwithinthekingdom,atanyrate.
?Thereisnoidealpositionforsuchatask.Thebiographerhastowork
withthepositionheorshehasintheworld,adjustingthatpositionas
necessarytodealwiththesubject.Everypositionhasstrengthsand
weaknesses:tothrive,awritermusttrytobecomeawareofthese,evaluate
themintermsofthesubject,andselectapositionaccordingly.
?Whentheirsubjectsareheroesorfamousfigures,biographiesoften
revealademocraticmotive:theyattempttoshowthattheirsubjectsareonly
human,nobetterthananyoneelse.Otherbiographiesaremeanttochangeus,
toinviteustobecomebetterthanweare.ThebiographiesofJesus(耶稣)
foundintheBibleareinthisclass.
?Biographersmayclaimthattheiraccountistheauthenticone.In
advancingthisclaim,theyarehelpedifthebiographyisauthorizedbythe
subject;thispresumablyallowsthebiographerspecialaccesstoprivate
information.Unauthorizedbiographiesalsohavetheirappeal,however,since
theycansuggestanindependenceofmindinthebiographer.Inbook
promotions,theunauthorizedcharacterisationusuallysuggeststheprospect
