LegacyThe19th-centuryscholarandeducationalistJ.S.BlackiesummedupBurnssimportancetoScotlandandtheScotswiththewords:WhenScotlandforgetsBurns,thenhistorywillforgetScotland.Today,Burnsisuniqueintheaffectionandfascinationthathismemoryinspires.ThefruitsofhislegacycanbeseennotonlyinScotlandbutaroundtheworld-onproductpackaging,inadvertisingandonawealthofmerchandise,aswellasthroughcontinuedscholarshipandacademicstudy.AuldLangSyne

RobertBurnsisthebestknownofthepoetswhohavewritteninScots.HispoemAuldLangSyneisoftensungatHogmanay.HismemoryiscelebratedbyBurnsclubsacrosstheworld;hisbirthdayisanunofficialNationalDayforScotsandthosewithScottishancestry,celebratedwithBurnssuppers.RobertBurnswasbornintoafarmingfamilyatAllowayinAyrshirein1759.HediedinDumfriesattheearlyageof37.YetinthatshorttimehehadtakentheScottishliteraryworldbystorm,andhadsecuredaplaceforhimselfinhistoryandinlegend.
