TheNationalReadingCompetitionisorganizedannuallyoverafive-monthperiod，ApriltoAugust.Thepreliminaryroundforchildrenisheldatindividualservicepoints/libraries.Followingthis，thetopperformerscompeteatthecountylevel.CountyChampionsarethenselectedforeachofthethreeagegroups：6—8，9—11and12—14.In1999，acategoryforadultswasintroduced，involvingpersonswhowere15yearsofageandover.

Testing

Testingateachstageincludesamixoforalandwrittenelementssuchasletters，bookreviews，andpuzzles.Thecompetitorsabilitytoread，understandandinterpretsetbooksorexcerpts（节录）ofbooksarethemaindeterminantsfortheselectionofwinners.TheadultsectionofthecompetitionisrunconcurrentlywiththechildrenssectionandemphasizesthereadingofmainlyWestIndianliterature.Thefinalstagebeginsinmid-Julyandculminates（达顶点）intheNationalReadingCompetitionQuizFinalsheldatTVJStudiosattheendofAugust.OneNationalChampionemergesfromeachcategoryaftertheseverycompetitivesectionsarecompleted.Theyaretheindividualswho，whenallscoresarecounted，gainthehighestmarksintheirrespectiveagegroups.
