Ancientgreenwisdomsuchasskywellscontinuetoinspiretodaysclimateadaptivedesignandinnovationsinpassivecooling,accordingtoWangZhengfeng,apostdoctoralresearcherinenvironmentalhumanitiesattheInstituteforAreaStudiesatLeidenUniversityintheNetherlands.Passivecoolingisamethodthatincorporatesdesignandtechnologytocoolabuildingwithouttheuseofpower.

WhenaskedaboutwhyskywellshavecaughtmoreattentionofmodernChinesepeople,Wangsaysthatthecourtyardisalsodesignedtoserveasagatheringspaceforfamiliesorcommunities,andcomeswithritualmeanings.Perhapschangesinthewayoflifecouldalsotriggervernacularnostalgiaamongpeoplelivinginconcreteandglassforests.

Skywellsweredesignedtocoolbuildingsinanerawellbeforeair-conditioningexisted.Whenwindblowsaboveaskywellhouse,itcanentertheindoorspacethroughtheopening.Becauseoutdoorairisoftencoolerthanindoorair,theincomingbreezetravelsdownthewallstothelowerstoriesandcreateairflowsbyreplacingwarmerindoorair,whichrisesandleavesthroughtheopening.

InHuizhou,askywellissmallbuttall,andtheroomsarounditcanblockoutsunlightonhotdays,enablingthebottomoftheskywelltostaycool,headds.

Meanwhile,hotairinsidethehousecanriseandescapethroughtheopeningabovetheskywell,whichworks
