soundless,hourafterhourwhileweareasleep.Outsidetheclosedcurtainsof
thebedroomavasttransfbrmationsceneistakiagplace,justasifamyriad
elvesandbrownieswereatwork,andweturnandyawnandstretchandknow
nothingaboutit.Andthen,whatanextraordinarychangeitis!Itisasifthe
housecontinent.Eventheinside,whichhasnotbeentouched,seemsdifferent,
everyroomappearingsmallerandcosier,justasifsomepowerweretryingto
turnitintoawoodcutter’shutorasnuglogcabin.Outside,wherethegarden
wasyesterday,thereisnowawhiteandglisteninglevel,andthevillagebeyond

invisiblecapsandmagicshoes.Youyourselvesdonotfeelquitethesamepeople
youwereyesterday.Howcouldyounotwhensomuchhasbeenchanged?Thereisa
curiousstir,alittleshiverofexcite-ment,troublingthehouse,notunlike
thefeelingthereisabroadwhenajourneyhastobemade.Thechildren,of
course,areallexcitementbuteventheadultshangaboutandtalktoone
