A.Definition

InformationTheoryisabranchofappliedmathematicsandelectricalengineeringdealingwiththequantification,storage,andcommunicationofinformation.Itwasdevelopedin1948byClaudeShannon.Thefundamentalproblemofcommunicationistoconveyamessagefromasendertoareceiverwithoutanyerrors.InformationTheoryisthestudyofhowinformationistransmittedoveracommunicationmedium,andhowthecommunicationmediumaffectsthetransmissionprocess.

B.BasicConcepts

SomebasicconceptsofInformationTheoryareentropy,noise,channelcapacity,coding,anderrorcontrol.Entropyisameasureofuncertainty,andisusedtohelpdeterminetheamountofinformationcontainedinasignal.Noiseisanydisturbancesthathaveanimpactonthetransmissionofinformation.Channelcapacityisthemaximumamountofdatathatcanbetransmittedthroughacommunicationchannel.Codingistheprocessoftranslatingthemessagefromthesourceintoaformthatcanbeunderstoodbythedestination.Errorcontrolistheprocessofdetecting,identifying,andcorrectinganyerrorsthatoccurduringtransmission.
