    Abstract.Wepresentpredictionsofthesignaturesofmagnetosheathparticleprecipitation

    (intheregionsclassifiedasopenlow-latitudeboundarylayer,cusp,manfieandpolarcap)

    forperiodswhentheinterplanetarymagneticfieldhasasouthwardcomponent.Theseare

    madeusingthepulsatingcuspmodeloftheeffectsoftime-varyingmagnetic

    reconnectionatthedaysidemagnetopause.Predictionsaremadeforbothlow-altitude

    satellitesinthetopsideionosphereandformidaltitudespacecraftinthemagnetosphere.

    Low-altitudecuspsignatures,whichshowacontinuousiondispersionsignature,reveal

    ;quasi-steadyreconnection(onelimitofthepulsatingcuspmodel),whichpersistsfora

    periodofatleast10min.Weestimatethatquasi-steadyinthiscontextcorrespondsto

    fluctuationsinthereconnectionrateofafactorof2orless.Theotherlimitofthe

    pulsatingcuspmodelexplainstheinstantaneousjumpsintheprecipitatingionspectrum

    thathavebeenobservedatlowaltitudes.Suchjumpsareproducedbyisolatedpulsesof

    reconnection:thatis,theyareseparatedbyintervalswhenthereconnectionrateiszero.

    Thesealsogenerateconvectingpatchesonthemagnetopauseinwhichthefieldlines

    threadtheboundaryviaarotationaldiscontinuityseparatedbymoreextensiveregionsof

    tangentialdiscontinuity.Predictionsofthecorrespondingionprecipitationsignaturesseen

    bymidaltitudespacecraftarepresented.Weresolvetheapparentcontradictionbetween

    estimatesoffl•ewidfl•oftheinjectionregionfrommidaltitudedataandtheconceptof

    continuousentryofsolarwindplasmaalongopenfieldlines.Inaddition,wereevaluate
