BenzalkoniumChlorideisamixtureofalkylbenzyldimethylammoniumchlo-

rides.Theingredientisusedincosmeticproductsasafoamingcleansingand

bactericidalagentatconcentrationsupto5.0%.Thecompoundwasnonmuta-

genieinseveraldifferentcellassays.Itisaskinandocularirritantat

concentrationsgreaterthan0.1%.Thiscosmeticingredientisnotasensitizer

tonormalhumansatconcentrationsofO.l%,butmaybetoindividualswith

diseasedskin.ItisconcludedthatBenzalkoniumChloridecanbesafelyused

asanantimicrobialagentatconcentrationsupto0.1%.

B(USP)nameforalkyldimethylbenzylammoniumchloride.’Itisamixtureof

alkylbenzyldimethylammoniumchloridesthatconformsgenerallytothefor-

mula2inFigure1.

TheRrepresentsamixtureofalkyls,includingallorsomeofthegroup

beginningwithn-H,,andextendingthroughhigherhomologs,withn-

C1zH15,n-C,,H,,,andn-H,,makingupthemajorportion.3Ontheanhy-

drousbasis,thecontentofn-C,,H2,isnotlessthan40.0%andthecontentof
