aroundarusticroomwithawoodenfloorwerethreelarge,regalSamoyeds.

Twoofthem,welearned,weretheproudparentsofthenewlitter;thethirdwas

thegrandfather,worldlyandmagisterialatthevenerableageofsix.Scampering

aroundthebigdogswerefourboisterouspuppies,eachanadorableyelping

cottonball.

“Yoursistheoneoverthere,”thebreedersaid,“underthestairs.”

Turningaround,JedandIsaw,standinginadifferentpartoftheroombyitself,

somethingthatlookedquitedifferentfromtheotherpuppies.Itwastaller,leaner,

lessfurry—andlesscute.Itshindlegsweretwoincheslongerthanitsfrontlegs,

givingitanawkwardtilt.Itseyeswerenarrowandveryslanted;itsears,oddly

protuberant.Itstailwaslongerandfullerthantheothers’,butmaybebecause

itwastooheavy,itdidn’tcurlup,butinsteadswungfromsidetosidelikearat’s

tail.

“Areyousurethat’sadog?”Iaskeddubiously.Thiswasn’taspreposterousa

questionasitmaysound.Ifanything,thecreaturemostresembledababylamb,

andgiventhatthebreedersraisedsomefarmanimalsontheirproperty,one

easilycouldhavewanderedin.

Butthebreederwassure.Shewinkedatus,andsaid,“You’llsee.She’llbea

greatbeauty.She’sgotthatgreathighSamoyedrear,justlikehergrandmother.”

WebroughtournewpuppyhomeanmedherPushkin—“Push”forshort—

eventhoughshewasagirl.Whenourfamilyandfriendsfirstmether,theyfelt

sorryforus.
